The opening reception for the 2008 Central Regional Meeting of the ACS will be hosted at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) on the evening of Tuesday June 10, beginning at 5:30 PM.


The evening promises to be an exciting kick-off to the meeting and will include hors doeuvres, cash bar, SciMix poster session, and access to exhibit areas at COSI (Space, Ocean, CSI Traveling Exhibit).


The reception will also feature a public lecture by Professor Lonnie Thompson, a recognized authority in the field of Climate Change, member of the National Academy of Sciences, and recipient of the 2007 National Medal of Science, on the topic of "Retreating Glaciers, Abrupt Climate and our Future", beginning at 8:00 PM.

The banquet and award presentations will be held in room Franklin A & B on Thursday, June 12, 6:30 - 8:30 PM, and will be attended by many ACS dignitaries. This will be an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of members in the areas of diversity and chemistry teaching, where we will be recognizing the Wonders of our World Program as this year's recipient of the Stanley C. Israel Regional Award for the Central Regional Meeting, and Mr. Jeffrey D. Bracken as the recipient of The ACS Division of Chemical Education Central Region Award for Excellence in High School Teaching (2008). Following the presentation of awards, Nina Busch Harris from Ravenhurst Champagne Cellars will speak on the topic of "The Chemistry of Wine", beginning at 8:00 PM.

The ACS Director's Breakfast will be held in the Peppercorn room on Thursday, June 12, 7:00 - 8:00 AM, and is an invitation to join your District Director and board member Diane Schmidt for a complimentary breakfast and an opportunity to share ideas, comments, concerns, and observations about your Society.

An opportunity to meet with the current ACS President, Bruce Bursten will be held in the Peppercorn room on Friday, June 13, 12:30 - 1:30 PM. Light snacks and beverages will be provided at this opportunity to meet with the ACS President and other attendant ACS dignitaries.

The OSU alumni reception will be hosted in the Hayes room on Friday, June 13, 5:30 - 7:30 PM, providing an opportunity to catch up with fellow alums and current faculty, over light refreshment, and learn about current and future visions for the OSU Department of Chemistry.
